Welcome to TBT
Affectionately dubbed 'TBT' by its community of dancers, Toowoomba Ballet Theatre unites dancers from around Queensland to stage full length unique productions in an immersive, non-competitive setting.
Origin Story
First established in 2016 as West Moreton Youth Ballet, the company premiered its inaugural production, The Cygnet, at the Gatton Shire Hall. What began as a small regional initiative quickly revealed a strong demand for high-quality ballet performance opportunities in the region.
In its second year, the company doubled in size and staged Snow White at Toowoomba’s iconic Empire Theatre in 2017. This milestone marked a turning point, prompting a rebrand to Toowoomba Ballet Theatre (TBT) to reflect its expanding reach and artistic vision.
Over the following years, TBT continued to grow in both scale and ambition, presenting annual full-length fairytale ballets including Cinderella, Rapunzel, and Aladdin. In 2020, Aladdin was postponed from April to December due to COVID lockdowns, with the company adapting and persevering through the challenges of the pandemic.
Despite ongoing uncertainty, TBT thrived. In 2021, the company staged Alice and later presented The Nutcracker as part of the Empire Theatre’s Homegrown Independent Program, marking its first year of staging two productions.
From 2022 onward, TBT established a consistent two-productions-per-year model, staging The Little Mermaid and Sleeping Beauty. In 2023, the company broadened its artistic scope with The Snow Queen alongside its first contemporary work, 7 Deadly Sins.
The year 2024 marked a significant milestone in TBT’s history. Following productions of Swan Lake and Beauty and the Beast, Swan Lake was taken on tour from Rockhampton to Brisbane, representing the company’s first major regional tour.
In 2025, TBT staged Don Quixote and The Princess and the Frog, also launching Toowoomba Ballet College, offering part-time classical ballet training to regional students.
2025 also celebrated ten years of uniting dancers from across Queensland, culminating in a special anniversary gala and concert that reunited past and present alumni to recreate favourite moments from every production.
In 2026, Toowoomba Ballet Theatre continues its upward trajectory with two productions, OZ and The Nutcracker. OZ features the largest cast in the company’s history, underscoring both TBT’s sustained growth and the enduring demand for regional performance opportunities.
From a single local production to a touring company and training institution, Toowoomba Ballet Theatre’s journey reflects a decade of artistic excellence, community connection, and unwavering commitment to regional dance.
